An Alzheimer's Valentine

By Tom and Karen Brenner
Alzheimer's Reading Room

We were impossibly young and so beautiful
When we met and fell in love.

You were the cool guy from the big city
I was the shy small town girl.

I bring you photographs of those days long ago
You look and smile and ask me who those people are.

I take your hand. It is warm and strong in mine.
You don't remember me but you know that we belong together.

I tell you the stories of those two young people.
You listen intently and study their faces

And look into my face
With wonder in your eyes.

I have come to understand that it doesn't matter
That you no longer remember who we were then.

It only matters that we can sit and hold hands
While I tell you stories of our past.

Like an old photograph, memory can fade away
But love endures.

In the touch of hands, in a smile,
In the wonder I see in your eyes.

Press Release: For Immediate Release

Please let your readers, members, family, volunteers, congregation
and employees know about the following.

For the fourth year, the National Council of Certified Dementia
Practitioners is offering The National Council of Certified Dementia
PractitionersAlzheimer's and Dementia Staff EducationWeek February
14th to the 21st Tool Kit. The Tool Kit is free and available at
portalstaging.nccdp.org ( https://portalstaging.nccdp.org/ ). The tool kit includes many
free Power Point in-services for downloadbeginning November 15t to
March 1st. Each in-service is designed to be taught in 30 minutes to
health care professionals, front line staff, volunteers, support
groups, congregations, families, state staff with AOA, state surveyors
and Ombudsman staff. One new in-service is on Sexuality, Intimacy
and the Dementia Patient. Simply log on to the web site
portalstaging.nccdp.org, complete the registration form and begin downloading.

The Tool Kit and the declaration by the NCCDP Alzheimer's and
Dementia Education Week February 14th to the 21st was developed to
bring national and international awareness to the importance of
providing comprehensive dementia education by means of face to face
interactive classroom environment to all healthcare professionals and
line staff and to go above and beyond the minimum state requirements
regarding dementia education.

Currently there are no national standards or international standards
for dementia education. There are new standards coming from CMS
regarding mandatory dementia education for CNA's working in Nursing
Homes. The regulations are different from state to state and
industry to industry. The NCCDP recommends at minimum an initial 8
hours of dementia education to all staff. Throughout the year,
additional dementia education should be provided that incorporates
new advances, culture change and innovative ideas.

In addition to facilitating the Train the Trainer programs, The
NCCDP promotes dementia education and certification of all staff who
qualify as Certified Dementia Practitioners (CDP®). The NCCDP
recommends that at minimum there should be one Certified Dementia
Practitioner® per shift. The NCCDP recommends a trained and
certified Alzheimer's and dementia instructor by the NCCDP to
utilize up to date NCCDP training materials.

The NCCDP recognizes the importance of educated and certified
dementia unit managers and certifying the Dementia Unit Manager as
Certified Dementia Care Manager (CDCM®). Dementia Unit Managers
report that they have received little training as a Dementia Unit
Manager.

Front Line First Responders and Law Enforcement need comprehensive
Dementia training and the NCCDP provides Alzheimer's and Dementia
training to First Responder and Law Enforcement educators and
certification as Certified First Responder Dementia Trainer®.

The free tool kit and staff in-services includes

Alzheimer's Bill of Rights and the Alzheimer's Pledge

The National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners®, LLC was
formed in 2001 by a group of professionals with varying work and
personal experiences in the field of dementia care. The Council was
formed to promote standards of excellence in dementia and Alzheimer's
education to professionals and other caregivers who provide services
to dementia clients. As the number of dementia cases continues to
increase nationally and worldwide, there is a great necessity to
insure that care givers are well trained to provide appropriate,
competent, and sensitive direct care and support for the dementia
patient. The goal of the Council is to develop and encourage
comprehensive standards of excellence in the health care profession
and delivery of dementia care.

NCCDP is endorsed and recognized by many organizations and
associations such as ProjectLifesaver International,NADONANational
Association of Directors of Nursing Administration in Long Term Care,
Dorland Health an Access Intelligence, Professional Patient Advocate
Institute, Care2Learn, Life Care Centers of America, Alzheimer's

Forget Me Not Foundation

Fantastic Idea that all Activity Directors and Therapeutic
Recreation Directors should participate in. They believe in
enhancing lives and spreading joy to residents and patients of nursing
homes, hospitals and other medical facilities through beauty of
flowers. This is a non profit foundation who will deliver donated
fresh cut flowers from their partners and show you how to break them
down and utilize them. If it is not offered in your state, find out
how to bring this program to your state. Great Idea!!!

Alzheimer's Diagnostic Guidelines -2011 New
https://www.nia.nih.gov/research/dn/alzheimers-diagnostic-guidelines

"For the first time in 27 years, clinical diagnostic criteria for
Alzheimer's disease dementia have been revised, and research
guidelines for earlier stages of the disease have been characterized
to reflect a deeper understanding of the disorder.

The National Institute on Aging/Alzheimer's Association Diagnostic
Guidelines for Alzheimer's Disease outline some new approaches for
clinicians and provide scientists with more advanced guidelines for
moving forward with research on diagnosis and treatments. They mark a
major change in how experts think about and study Alzheimer's
disease. Development of the new guidelines was led by the National
Institutes of Health and the Alzheimer's Association" NIH

NY Times: Path Is Found for the Spread of Alzheimer's (
https://nyti.ms/xE589N )

"According to two studies reported on in The New York Times,
"Alzheimer's disease (
https://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/alzheimers-disease/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier
) seems to spread like an infection from brain cell to brain cell,
two new studies in mice have found. But instead of viruses or
bacteria, what is being spread is a distorted protein known as tau.
The surprising finding answers a longstanding question and has
immediate implications for developing treatments, researchers said.
And they suspect that other degenerative brain diseases like
Parkinson's (
https://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/parkinsons-disease/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier
) may spread in a similar way."
