Dear Ms. Stimson and Ms. Biot-Gordon,

On behalf of American Senior Communities, I would like to endorse the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners.

I have had the pleasure of being both a Certified Dementia Practitioner and Certified Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Care Trainer for approximately a full decade. In that time, I have used the NCCDP Alzheimer's and Dementia Education curriculum to provide training to hundreds of dementia care team members on behalf of two LTC providers; teaching others to better serve elders living with various forms of dementia with greater efficacy and compassion.

I have found this organization to act consistently with the highest level of professionalism, integrity, and customer service.  Most impressive is your continued involvement in the day to day operations of the organization, Sandra and Lynn, as you continue to assist in the service of those of us offering education in the public and professional sectors, by personally answering emails, and making phone calls to provide assistance and resolve challenges as they occur.

ASC Memory Care remains steadfast in our commitment to utilizing NCCDP products, and we were pleased to add two additional Regional CADDCT’s to our Home Office Memory Care Support team this past December.  We added the additional trainers so that we may better reach more of our care community team members in the service of our elders living with A.D. and related forms of dementia.  We will also be introducing the Support Group leader certification in our Memory Care Weekly Message tomorrow, 3/26/18, that will reach all our ASC Memory Care, Community, and Regional leaders within our company to encourage them to take advantage of this exciting new certification opportunity.

Thank you for the provision of your excellent dementia training curricula, and for your support of our efforts. We look forward to future and long-lasting collaborative efforts as we continue to expand our service energies across the state of Indiana, and potentially, beyond.

Most gratefully and sincerely,

Melanie K. Perry, M.S., CDP, CADDCT
Director of Memory Care Support Services

“I obtained a lot of information that I had not heard before from the class discussion.  I also learned many tips on conducting the class and timing of the class.  Denise was very helpful in assisting me with all the information that I was hoping to obtain by taking this class as a refresher.”

Robin Walters, CADDCT, CDP, LPN

“I learned the different types of dementia and that one size does not fit all.  Knowing the different types of dementia will help me to approach each patient differently.  The plan is to implement what I learned in their daily care/interactions.  The presenter had each individual engaged and participated.  I learned a lot from the other classmates, as well.  I will definitely tell my coworkers about this class and encourage them to take it.”

“I learned many different things while taking this course that have increased my awareness when working with patients.  One is increasing awareness with out of sight and out of mind.  Making sure all items of the task are in view.  I also increased my awareness with looking at the bigger picture, medications, pain, vision and what other factors are increasing patient difficulties.  Loved everything about this seminar – Denise was great – very engaging the entire time!”

Megan Mckenna, OTR/L

“I learned more about the importance of repetition, visualization and the use of signs (picture and/or written reminders).  I also learned more about how person-centered care is effective for patients despite cognitive/memory deficits (examples of relating to a patient’s prior employment and skills to increase a patient’s participation via use of long-term memory and doing activities that the patient finds valuable).  I will apply knowledge that I learned to my practice/career as a physical therapist in a home care clinical setting.”

Kimberley Smith, DPT

“Communication strategies and methods to de-escalate in late stage dementia that were covered in this course will be helpful for my patients in memory care.”

“Everything was great – most especially Denise, who was genuine, interested and informative in such a gentle approachable manner.”

Elizabeth Peyton, OTR/L

“I learned much more than I already knew about the large variety of ways that dementia affects both my patients and their families.  I learned techniques for managing some of my patient’s behaviors, as well as techniques for communication with my patients, which I find to be the most valuable.”

Michelle Cordovi, PT

“This was my first dementia course – I learned a lot of new things that I can take back to the staff who work at DuBois Nursing Home. I learned different “behaviors/stages” of different types of dementia; that it’s important to train family members on how to visit to benefit them and their cognitively impaired loved ones; learned that there is such a thing as “trigger tracking” to determine what might cause anxiety behaviors and how those can be avoided.”

Brittney Sallack

“I really enjoyed Brenda’s presentation style and all the real world examples.  I learned how important screening and initial assessments are in setting our residents and staff up for success, as well as some best practices.  I hope to implement what I learned in the planning and opening of our SNALR.”

Ashley Petito, LCSW

“I learned more about the non-reversible types of dementia – my students love this topic so I am excited to have a better understanding. “Validation and language really stood out to me and how important both of those are in providing care to people with Alzheimer’s and dementia.  Want to implement more life skills stations into programming.  Enjoyed the entirety of the seminar.  Would have preferred an in-person training, but virtual was enjoyable, engaging and interactive.”

Michelle Russo, CADDCT, CDP

“I learned that dementia does not always mean memory loss.  The work dementia is a word to describe a group of symptoms.  It is a general term, and that Alzheimer’s is the most expensive disease in America.  Providing continued education in these matters for many healthcare professionals will allow others to understand the condition much better than ignoring it, which can cause misjudgment for many senior adults.  I very much enjoyed all aspects of the seminar and the information provided.”

“I found the section pertaining to communication to be very helpful and I can use this in my interactions with clients and their families.”

Renee Allison-Riley, CSA

“I especially enjoyed the topic of meal times, bath times and hobbies and the examples of items to hang in cafeteria and bathroom and creating an area for their hobbies.  I plan to conduct the personal interviews with my residents’ families – so I can implement the activities that are listed in the notebook to help my residents feel safe.  Every topic was covered, explained in detail and gave good details and lots of examples that I can apply at work.  I am also going to share with my staff ways to speak and using mild tones and to come to me when they need a break, too.  I will share with my employees ways to learn about their residents and develop an accurate care plan that will better meet their needs.”
